Seeking Hydra by Peter Edwards: We Are All Hydra

Little Fears Presents Book 4 of the series:

If anything is going to save the Little Fears from awful punch lines, it is not Hydra having an existential crisis. In Seeking Hydra, Great British groaners are the order of the day as the assembled Little Fears make their way through 90 tales of lemon trees, kinky behaviour, confused doors and mystical road hogs. Boxers seek a joke; Beat finds his pop; Sprite sees a Russian president; Lucy shoots a clay pigeon; Emu’s tossed out of a club. Written and posted with scruffy illustrations daily on LittleFears.co.uk, these brief vignettes (50 to 100 words) chronicle the continuing adventures of the Little Fears. With only a sense of whimsy and a deep love of old British comedy, Seeking Hydra will make you groan, cry and laugh until a bit of wee comes out, in a truly original, unoriginal, work of art and fiction.

There is something to be said about puns. They offer you humor and also fun (pun) with words. As someone who dearly loves to make corny jokes and mostly bad puns (according to beloved friends subjected to it), this book is somewhat of a treat to me. The book is a clever collection of puns, wittiness and existential crisis for some of the characters. There were also some art included in each of the entries which makes for an aesthetic appreciation aside from the art of pun itself.

Some of the entries seem familiar, and not just because I follow Little Fears’ blog, but also because some have also reached the ears of this pun loving kid right here (maybe not the exact one, but something similar – because the ones in here is quite original). Reading each entry tug the corner of my lips up in a smile, and I’m already thinking of sharing them to some of my friends, which will undoubtedly make them sigh and regret being friends with me.

There was also the array of characters featured in the book – Yuffie, Spectre, Hydra, Reala, Fuen, Clouds and more! They engage in conversations which eventually lead to some puns and words that are designed to make the readers (depending on their kind of humor) sigh, smirk, laugh or just read on. In my case, it’s definitely the first two in alternation over the course of the 90 short stories/entries.

This can be a light read or even a way to pass the time. But some of the issues tackled left some floating thoughts in me – from the politicians, to the existential crisis, to representing our fears and to the dogs in heaven. You can definitely take some of the entries at face value and derive fun and laughter while you’re at it, but you can also discover some meanings for yourself and how it relates to YOU.

Maybe we are all Hydra. We seek ourselves in the books we read, in the movies we watch and in the jokes we hear. I especially love the last entry in the book where it says:

“So you exist, in a substantial physical form, taking up space around you atomically.”

“I guess,” replied Hydra. “What does that mean?”

“YOU MATTER.”

All in all, this is a delightful read. I’m glad I found it by chance on Little Fear’s post. And it’s free!

Go read it. You’ll love it! I know I did.

Lastly, I’m just gonna share this lovely song “East” by Sleeping at Last which for some reason was a fitting background music while I was reading the book. It’s been on repeat since last night but it also suits the mood somehow:
